Day 25 – 2013-08-02, Friday – Cheyenne, WY to Billings, MT

Travel Day! Not that exciting, actually, as we have a very long day today. Left at 8:30, stopped for lunch at the Casper, WY Wendy’s. Didn’t see any ghosts, though. Fueled up at Safeway (10 cent Tom Thumb discount, woohoo!) and were on our way an hour later. Pulled into the Billings KoA at 16:30 (that’s 4:30 PM for you civilians). Seven hours of driving – ugh! I don’t enjoy it like I used to. Scenery was very nice, though, so there was that. Maybe tomorrow (after we ride!) we’ll backtrack to Little Big Horn – I’ve heard it’s a very photogenic location.

Dinner at Old Chicago Pizza (The Bear had to have a pizza fix – great idea!), pretty darned good deep-dish pizza. A Guiness to wash it down, life is good!

Back to camp and off to sleep.

Day 24 – 2013-08-01, Thursday – Cheyenne, WY

Ok, last full day in Cheyenne, last day to ride. We’re going to Vedauwoo! Woohoo! Ok, it’s pronounced VEE-DA-VOO, or so the locals tell us. We asked more than one, to be sure.

Nice scenery, and some interesting trails. We got … misdirected, shall we say, and ended up two miles in a direction we really did not want, but that’s ok, it’s all riding, isn’t it? I’m blaming the Mex … ahhh, Italian we have with us. He gets the blame for everything, from here on out. Part of the price he pays to be on such an epic trip.

Got some nice shots today:

Vedauwoo Waterfall-2

This was a little waterfall we came upon shortly after dropping down into the trails. It’s also where we took a wrong turn …

Well, as I said, the scenery was nice, and we came upon some cowboys using dogs to round up cattle:

Roundup-2Here is a panorama that I took of the area:

Vedauwoo PanoBeautiful country!

Ok, lots of trails, lots of time getting lost and getting found, but there was one trail I HAD to see. Phallic Trail. Honest! I didn’t call it that! And for the life of me, I can’t figure out why it’s called that, though now I can say I’ve ridden it. Here are a couple of photos:

Phallic Trail-2Maybe that’s the reason in the distance, but it doesn’t seem right.

Anyway, here’s a pano of the area:

Phallic Trail Pano

Looks ok, but there was almost no trail there. Dodging those little bushes was NOT a lot of fun!

Ok, another thing about Cheyenne – they have these places everywhere:

Kum & Go-2

I was afraid to go in there! Is it a house of ill … mmm … never mind! Let’s go gas up at King Soopers.

Anyway, short story long, we managed to get off the trail JUST before the rain started (there’s that curse again!), and got ourselves back into town.

Went to Chili’s for a late lunch. That was a disaster. Sat us quickly, but that’s when the wheels came off this thing. Waitress – excuse me – our server, took about ten minutes to get our drink orders – water all around – we’re cyclists, see? Then she took another ten to take our order, meanwhile really chatting up the table behind us, who was there ONLY for the 39 cent wings (a real money-maker for the restaurant, I’m sure), The Bear checked in with FourSquare, which offered us free Chips and Salsa (we’ve done this before a few times in Dallas, so we know how it’s supposed to work), which she mentioned to the waitress … server, I mean. Eventually, we got our food, but sans the Chips and Salsa. The tab was $36.00, and I paid $36.00, and asked for the manager on the way out. A little skinny guy showed up, looking a bit nervous, and my statement to him went like this: “Julie (that was our server’s name, according to the ticket) is going to complain that those assholes from Texas didn’t leave a tip. She’s right. I don’t leave a tip when I get bad service. She took forever to get us our food, and she never refilled our water glasses, or even asked if we needed anything, never mind the Chips and Salsa we were supposed to get. I tip well when I get good service – you can call The Bunkhouse, where we ate last night, and find out I tipped $25.00 on a $100.00 tab, so I don’t mind tipping for good service – which we did NOT get here today. And by the way, the last time I left no tip was over ten years ago, I’m fairly easy to please.” He was very apologetic, but I didn’t want anything in return, just for him to know I wasn’t happy, and was leaving that way.

Head for home and start packing for tomorrow, when we leave for Billings, Montana!

Day 23 – 2013-07-31, Wednesday – Cheyenne, WY

Alright, early start to the day … NOT! Who holds it up? Who ALWAYS holds it up? Yup, it’s me, Bill!

Today, it’s the Happy Jack trail. Don’t know who Happy Jack is, or why he’s so happy, but we’re going to go try and find out. Skies are clear for a change.

Here’s the only picture I took on this trail:

Happy Jack 1

No, I’m not going to make some rude comment (though I WAS tempted!), I’m just going to ask a question: If you’re going to go to the trouble of putting this sign on with SIX screws … would it not just have been easier to cut off that stump of a branch? Hmmm … on second thought, maybe they were talking about the trail getting kind of gnarly, which it did. Yeah, that must be it!

As we finished the ride, it started to pitter on us! The curse is back! Packed the bikes up in a flash (no, not lightning, thankfully, just quickly!), and went on down the road.

Well, as we promised, we went back to The Bunkhouse for dinner, as we promised (which was noticed, by the way – the waitress made a comment – “you guys are back, like you said you would!”     Yes, ma’am, we like to keep our word.

Of course, we showed up too early for dinner, so what to do? Well, drink beer and burn an hour until then! Buds all around and appetizers, then dinner and off to the campground. Tomorrow we ride some more!

Day 22 – 2013-07-30, Tuesday – Fort Collins, CO to Cheyenne, WY

Well, we packed up early and headed out of Fort Collins. Tremendously long drive of just over one hour! But at least, it let us go for a ride out at Curt Gowdy State Park! Yes, The Bear and I have ridden it before (just a few days ago, matter of fact), but wanted Adrian to experience it. Nice trail!

Here are some more shots of it, first a little scenic:

Curt Gowdy Again

We rode around that guy, and it was a lot of fun!

Here is a shot of Barri levitating her bike. Usually, it likes to go so much that it falls down on its own – here she’s teaching it to behave:

Barri Levitating Bike

That was pretty much it for today, our travel day. Oh – but we did get rained on before the ride ended, so the curse still lives!

You know how, sometimes, you try to show off, and it really just backfires on you? Well, Adrian wanted me to take a picture of him on a big rock, so all his friends would think he had climbed it on the bike (I guess – he says no, but you know how those stories go …). Well, no sooner had he said “let me move over there after I unclip” when the mountain biking gods got their revenge! Not only did he not unclip (right away, anyway – or should I say, upright), but when he reached out to The Bear for support, he missed, and down he went! I ran forward, and snapped this:

Fallen1

Immediately followed by this:

Fallen2

Of course, his comment was “You’re not going to post that!” No, Adrian, don’t worry, I’m not going to post that … today. But it’s not “today” anymore!

He’s been much more honest about his riding since then! And just to prove that I’m really a nice guy, here’s a photo of Adrian actually ON his bike:

DSCN0776

On the way back, Adrian wanted to put in a few more miles, so he asked us to pick him up at a place that “looks like a restaurant, with some old pickups out front”. Of course! And while we stopped to get him (at The Bunkhouse), we stepped in for a beer! They asked if we wanted dinner, but we declined, having already planned a spaghetti dinner, but we did indicate that we’d be back tomorrow – that menu looks good!

Day 21 – 2013-07-29, Monday – Fort Collins, CO

Well, today looked grey and gloomy, AGAIN, so we went grocery shopping, moped around a bit, and then decided, ok, no mountain bike trails, how about we do some of the local concrete trail that goes all around and through Fort Collins? Off we went, and it threatened rain, but never really did. It did sprinkle on us as we were packing up, though.

Day 20 – 2013-07-28, Sunday – Fort Collins, Walden, Steamboat Springs, and Estes Park, CO

Well, the curse is alive and well. It rained last night. Matter of fact, it’s still raining as we try to cook breakfast! So much for Adrian maybe breaking the curse – he made it worse!

This is what it looked like outside when we got up:

Morning Weather

Ugh! No riding today. Damn!

Well, we had heard of a scenic drive, so we took off for Walden on Colorado 14. Very nice drive! Less than 100 miles, but about 3 hours, so, kind of winding roads out here!

Here’s a photo of the drive:

Driving2

And here’s another:

Driving1

Unfortunately, when you get there, there’s not much to see in town! On a lark, we headed for Steamboat Springs, to try and find some lunch, which we did, at a grand eatery by the name of Wendy’s. Yes, THAT Wendy’s. Three salads and we’re on our way.

Looking at the map, the drive I’d heard about was taking highway 34 From Estes Park back towards Fort Collins, so we’d have to first be IN Estes Park to start that trip, so off we went, with Poindexter leading the way. Not so fast, pardner! To get to Estes Park on 34, you have to go through Rocky Mountain National Park, and THAT is twenty bucks! Adrian whipped it out of his wallet, prepared to take a bullet for us all, when Barri pipes up “WAIT! Is this a National Park? Will our Annual Pass work here?” Of course it does! Financial crisis averted, and we are on our way. BUT … we’re low on fuel …

Bill – “Is there Diesel fuel at Estes Park?”

Ranger – “Yes … how much fuel do you have?”

Bill – “An eighth of a tank”

Ranger – “That’ll be enough!”

Yes … well … maybe, and maybe not. My concern grew as the needle dipped, we were climbing, climbing, climbing … to heaven, it seemed … still 25 miles away … and then the low-fuel light comes on, and the truck dings to remind me I REALLY should have fueled up when we stopped to pee, back in Steamboat Springs. ARGH!!

Well, it was a nail-biter, for sure, and we were surely running on fumes, but we finally hit the outskirts of Estes Park, and there was a Shell station. A bit overpriced at 3.99 a gallon, but we were not about to quibble! As it turns out, another Shell on the way out of town was only 3.79, but, well, we had fuel. Off to Fort Collins we go, and off to bed. What a long day!

Oh, yeah, and on the way back to the trailer, we saw a sign that Colorado 14, the road we took this morning, is closed due to a mudslide! We are 8 miles from the State Park where we want to ride. What are the odds the trail is still wet tomorrow. Damn!

I’m tired! I have photos, but they’ll have to wait, sorry.

Ok, photos are up (obviously!) and here is another, from the top of Rocky Mountain National Park:

Day 19 – 2013-07-27, Saturday – Fort Collins, CO and Denver, CO

Ok, woke up this morning, had some errands to run, so no riding – bummer! Had to get the truck tires checked out – yes, they’re new, but I had a question about the valve cores that had been used. Turns out new ones are flexible, so all is ok. I just remembered on the old truck, they were all metal, and not replaced when you replaced tires. I guess they figured out a way to make them easily replaceable and last less so they have something else to tack on to your bill when you replace your tires. I seriously doubt they are REALLY an improvement over the older style – my original valve stems are still on my 1992 Dodge, and they still work fine. Will these last 20 years? I feel I can safely say – no way!

Mid-afternoon, we head to Denver, to pick up the third part of our party – my cousin Adrian. Plane is a bit late, but he arrives ok, and we head back to Fort Collins, to have dinner before hitting the sack. Ate at Austin’s Grill – good food, and not too terribly pricy. The three of us got out of there for under $60. Before tip, of course, but still a good deal. And the food was good, and certainly enough for us.

Back to the pop-up, and off to sleep!

Day 18 – 2013-07-26, Friday – Cheyenne, WY to Fort Collins, CO

Today, we travel again! Got up a bit late, as we’re not in a big hurry – we have to check out by 10, but can’t check in until after 1, and the drive is only about an hour, so there will be a lot of something to burn time. We decided to go shopping for stuff we need for the trailer.

Left before noon, and all was going pretty well, until exit 281 off IH-25, when everything came to a screeching halt. Serious slamming of brakes, to keep from hitting the cars in front, and, since the line of stopped vehicles stretched literally as far as the eye could see (and the eye could see at least two miles down the road!), and we were only about five miles from our exit, we got off and let Poindexter recalculate the route. Gotta love automotive GPS!

Checked in, set up, pretty nice KoA, though it’s right on State 287, and thus a bit noisy. Got a good night’s sleep to prep for the next day.

Day 17 – 2013-07-25, Thursday – Cheyenne, WY

Today, a rest day, because … we went to the rodeo! Cheyenne Frontier Days, to be exact. I’d been to a rodeo before, but it was more than fifty years ago. Damn, I’m old! It was much as I remembered, though the critters seemed much more docile. I’ll post photos soon, but I have a LOT to go through.

One thing HAS changed – cowgirls dress a LOT differently these days! Welcome change, believe me! I have a few photos just for my cousin, who told me he would miss the rodeo as it was something that did not interest him. He’ll be crying when he sees what he missed!
